GENEVA, (ST)- Health Minister Nizar Yazigi has stressed that the strategy adopted by the health ministry to maintain the general health in Syria has kept the health situation in the country stable despite the challenges appeared during the terrorist war imposed on Syria, noting that no epidemic or pandemic was registered in the country over the past six years
In a speech during the70th World Health Assembly Meeting at the UN Headquarters in Geneva, Yaziji said the Syrian government has spared no effort and is working in full capacity as to meet the needs of the citizens through the health institutions which continue to provide different medical services to citizens for free.
The government also has facilitated the delivery of the medical relief shipments sent by international health organizations, mainly the WHO, to different Syrian areas damaged by the terrorist war, the minister added.
He went on to say that the ministry is doing its best to rehabilitate the health facilities damaged by terrorism, noting that a number of health centers have resumed work in Aleppo after rehabilitation activities.
He called for the support of the WHO in the process of rehabilitating the heath sector’s infrastructure and the first aid system and in ensuring necessary medical equipment.
Yazigi affirmed that the terrorist war on Syria has badly affected the health sector, noting that tens of hospitals, health centers and ambulances were destroyed and many members of the health sector staff were martyred while doing their humanitarian mission.
The unilateral coercive economic measures unfairly imposed on Syria have badly affected the living of the Syrian people and have had very negative impacts on the health sector in terms of meeting the health needs of the citizens, the minister said.
He urged the WHO to provide necessary technical assistance as to immediately lift the unfair siege imposed on the Syrian health sector.
