Syria, Czech Republic Sign Declaration of Intent on Monuments Protection

Syria and Czech Republic have signed declaration of intent to establish a long-term cooperation in fields of the restoration of monuments, protection of cultural heritage in Syria and holding exhibitions about Syrian monuments and culture in the Czech Republic.

The declaration, which was signed today by Director General of DGAM in Syria Dr. Maamoun Abdul Karim and Director of National Museum in Prague Michal Lukeš, includes cooperation in various fields and an international campaign to introduce Syrian culture to the whole world through holding exhibitions.

‘An agreement was reached to hold exhibition about damaged Syrian monuments in Prague in October,” Dr. Abdul Karim said, indicating that Syrian experts will be invited to the Czech Republic to benefit from its experience in the field of the restoration of monuments.

On his part, Czech Deputy Minister of Culture Ouroda Vlastislav said that Syria has the most beautiful heritage in the world, expressing his sorrow over monuments that were damaged in a barbaric and systematic way there.

“Czech Republic is ready to cooperate with Syria in international projects that aim to restore stolen Syrian antiquities,” he added.

Last month, Directorate-General of Antiquities and Museums  (DGAM) announced that 89 looted artifacts returned to Syria through Lebanon and the sale of other looted artifacts in Europe was stopped in cooperation with INTERPOL and UNESCO.

There are 10.000 archeological sites in Syria, 300 of them have been damaged since the start of the terrorist war on Syria, Dr. Abdulkarim told the French Le Figaro newspaper in 2015.

Since 2011, Syria has faced a foreign-backed terror war targeting its army, people, civilization and infrastructures in accordance with US-Zionist plot that aims to fragment the region and to have hegemony over its wealth.
