Japan, Sweden Urge Holding Security Council Meeting to Get Details of Russian Memo on De Escalation Zones in Syria

NEW YORK, (ST)- Japan and Sweden have requested a UN Security Council meeting to obtain specific details of a Russia memorandum on establishing de-escalation zones in Syria, diplomats said today, according to AFP.

The agency quoted the diplomats as saying that the session is expected to be held this week as to help the council’s member states adopt a resolution on supporting the memorandum.

Russia has presented a draft resolution to the council that welcomes the deal and has called on all parties to support the draft’s provisions.

The countries acting as guarantors of the cessation of hostilities in Syria, ( Russia, Turkey and Iran) signed the Russian memorandum on setting up de-escalation zones in Syria during Astana 4 meeting which was held on may 3rd and 4th in the Kazakh capital.

AFP also reported that the UN envoy Staffan de Mistura announced yesterday that the next round of negotiations will begin on May 16.
