Krähenbühl Asserts Syrian Government Provides Shelters, School Buildings to Palestinian Refugees

DAMASCUS, (ST)- UNRWA Commissioner-General Pierre Krähenbühl has declared that his current visit to Syria will attract world’s attention to situation of Palestinian refugees during the difficult circumstances Syria is going through.

He referred to the importance of talks he held with Syrian officials in order to meet Palestinian refugees’ needs, especially in Aleppo province, asserting that Syrian government respects Palestinian refugees and attaches great interest to them.

 “My five-day visit to Syria zeroed in on situation of Palestinian refugees in Aleppo where many of them had been displaced for several times and lost their homes and jobs,” Krähenbühl said during a press conference held today in UNRWA Office in Syria. .

He  made it clear that 9000 Palestinian refugees are living in Aleppo city while there are 16.000 others in al-Nairab camp in the same city. “The Palestinian refugees ,who were displaced from Ein al-Tal camp in 2013, are living in temporary shelters offered by Syrian government. Some of them are living in al-Nairab camp and in other centers affiliated to UNRWA.”

There are 440.000 Palestinian refugees in Syria

“Before 2011, the number of Palestinian refugees in Syria reached up to 560.000 recorded by UNRWA,”  Krähenbühl added, indicating that 110.000-120.000 Palestinian refugees left Syria to Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey, Egypt and Europe.

“Around 440.000 Palestinian refugees are still living in Syria and 65% of them are displaced,” he stressed, pointing out that 55 school buildings have been made available by Syria government to enable UNRWA to provide its educational services.

“The number of students in UNRWA schools raised this year to 45.000 compared to 20.000 in 2012,” Krähenbühl said, adding that the number of school students was 66.000 before 2011.

He concluded by saying that UNRWA lost 20 workers in Syria and it received only 55% of required support during emergency appeal launched last year.
