Lavrov:’ Armed groups’ Reasons for Suspending their Participation in Astana Talks on Syria ‘Unconvincing’

MOSCOW,(ST)_Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has asserted that the main goal of Astana talks on Syria is to make progress in enhancing security and stability and in implementing the UN resolution No 2254, describing the reasons announced by the ‘armed groups’ via media outlets for suspending their participation in the talks as ‘ unconvincing’.

His remark came during a press conference held Tuesday with his Democratic Congolese counterpart Jean-Claude Gakosso.

“We have been assessing the latest news together with the Defense Ministry. We believe that the reasons preventing the armed opposition from taking part in the new Astana meeting that were mentioned in the media, were not convincing,” the Russian diplomat said.

He added that he discussed the matter over the phone with his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu, according to TASS.

“We are sorting out what has happened to the position of the armed opposition. Yesterday I spoke with my counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu,” Lavrov said. “We have grounds to believe that there is some misunderstanding.”

The third round of talks was scheduled on Today and Tomorrow in Kazakhstan but the ‘armed groups’ announced that they will not participate in the talks under the pretext of non-implementation of cessation of hostilities deal.
