GENEVA, (ST)- Head of the Syrian Arab Republic’s delegation to the Intra-Syrian Talks in Geneva Bashar Al-Jaafari has stressed that the most important achievement made during the fourth round of talks was the agreement on a four-point agenda, pointing out that the fourth point was listed upon the delegation’s request and included the issue of fighting terrorism.
In a press conference on Saturday, al-Jaafari said “we managed to impose a balanced agenda that serves the higher interest of the Syrian people,” noting that the four points of discussion include the rule, the constitution, the elections and the fight against terrorism.
“Main focus during the talks was made on the topic of fighting terrorism. Other points in the agenda were not discussed deeply. We only agreed on the agenda,” al-Jaafari added.
He went on to say “we have submitted to de Mistura a paper on the main principles for political solution to the crisis in Syria. The UN envoy benefited from this paper in preparing a 12-point [non-paper] based on our paper. We also presented some amendments to this [non-paper] given to us by the UN envoy’s advisor during our talks.”
We want a national partner, not a Qatari, Saudi, French or Turkish partner
Al-Jaafri stressed that the delegation will do its best to make the discussion of the agenda a success as it has no problem with dealing with any of the points listed on the agenda as long as they include the fight against terrorism.
The Syrian senior diplomat said that Riyadh platform “opposition” delegation’s remarks were politically immature. “This is the mistake of the UN envoy who didn’t work to unite the oppositions in one delegation,” he added.
“We want a national partner in the talks not a Qatari, Saudi, French or Turkish partner,”a Al-Jaafari reiterated, pointing out that “those who refuse to deal with the topic of fighting terrorism will prove themselves to be terrorists or agents of terrorism sponsors.”
