UNSC: Astana Talks Important to Return to Intra-Syrian Dialogue in Geneva

NEW YORK, (ST)-The UN Security Council on Friday expressed support for the talks on Syria  to be held in the Kazakh Capital Astana on Monday, stressing that they would be an important step to come back to the UN-led intra-Syrian dialogue in Geneva.

During a closed-door meeting, the council discussed the forthcoming Astana talks after the United Nations decided to send envoy Staffan de Mistura to the meeting.

Sweden’s ambassador and council president Olof Skoog said the Astana talks could help shore up a “ceasefire” and “represent an important stepping stone coming back to UN-led talks in Geneva thereafter,” according to AFP.
