Syria Reiterates Principled Position on Supporting Palestinian People

NEW YORK – Charge d’ Affairs of the Syrian delegation to the UN Munzer Munzer affirmed that Syria has a principled position to support the right of the Palestinians to self-determination, to the establishment of their sovereign independent state with al-Quds  as its capital, and to guarantee the right to return of the Palestinian refugees, SANA reported.

During a UN Security Council session on the situation in the Middle East held on Tuesday, Munzer said “We strongly condemned the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Nickolay Mladenov’s ignoring of the Israeli continued violations in the occupied Syria Golan.”

Munzer noted that the meeting coincides with 50 years of Israeli occupation of the Arab territories, denouncing the Israeli systematic violation of the international humanitarian law and human rights laws.

He added that the international community hasn’t taken any real steps to end this occupation which encouraged Israel to expand its unprecedented settlement policy, with the diplomat calling upon the UN Security council to immediately implement the resolution which was recently adopted on condemning the settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian territories, which should apply to the Israeli settlement policies in the occupied Syrian Golan, as Israel has decided to increase its settlement activities there.

“The war we have suffered in Syria is partly because we haven‘t succumbed to the pressures to relinquish our support for the Palestinian people and their just cause,” Munzer said, stressing that Israel refuses to return the occupied Syrian Golan to its motherland and to commit to the international legitimacy resolutions, and furthermore, Israel continues to violate the international humanitarian law and international human rights law with the aim of eliminating the Syrian identity in the occupied Syrian Golan.

He said that Israel continues to loot the resources of Golan and it planted more than 20 million landmines in it, in addition to preventing its people from learning in Arabic as well as depriving them from carrying their Syrian identity cards, and employing a policy of arbitrary and unlawful arrest and coercion against them.

Munzer pointed out that Israel offers all kinds of support to the terrorist organizations in the disengagement area in the occupied Syrian Golan, including the ISIS and Jabhat al-Nusra, in clear violation of the disengagement agreement and the UN resolutions.

He also noted that Israel perpetrated a new aggression on the Syrian territories after the midnight of January 13th, as Israeli warplanes fired a number of rockets which landed in the surrounding of al-Mezzeh airport, causing a fire in the areas, adding that Mladenov and the UN seem to have not heard about this attack, an attack which emphasizes that Israel and terrorism are two sides of the same coin.
