UN Peacekeepers Return to Syrian Golan Heights: UN

UNITED NATIONS, (ST)-The United Nations has announced that a group of peacekeepers from the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force UNDOF has returned to the Syrian Golan Heights.

On September 15, 2014, the United Nations withdrew a number of UNDOF peacekeepers working in the Syrian Golan Heights from several sites after terrorists of “Jabhat al-Nusra” had kidnapped more than 40 Fiji UN peacekeepers and besieged other Philippine personnel.

  United Nations’ spokesman Farhan Haq said in a statement published by AFP that “the number of UN peacekeepers who have arrived at al-Fawwar camp in al-Quneitra reached 127”. “More UN peacekeepers are expected to arrive in the area within a week,” he added.

Haq pointed out that “for now, the peacekeepers will perform as many of the mandated tasks as they can if security conditions permit.”

According to UN officials, the peacekeepers who will return are from Nepal and Fiji, pointing out that some 150 personnel of these forces will have positions in al-Fawwar camp within the coming days.

The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates has stressed that the terrorist organizations more than once committed crimes of kidnapping UN peacekeepers, reiterating that the Syrian government holds these terrorist organizations and the countries supporting them complete responsible for the crimes.
