WASHINGTON- Russian military will continue providing support to Syrian army in the fight against terrorism, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Friday, Sputnik reported.
In an interview with the CNN broadcaster, Peskov said “Russian air forces are continuing to perform its duties in order to support activities of Syrian army against terrorists and this operation is being continued.”
According to Peskov, Russian President Vladimir Putin will continue working with the administration of US President Barack Obama on Syria as there is no time to wait for the inauguration of Donald Trump.
He stressed that Syria is the issue that cannot be put on a “pause.”
“Syria is the burning issue and we cannot afford a pause of couple of months. So we have couple of months ahead [before the inauguration of Trump in January] and will continue to work with an acting administration in Washington and Putin will continue to work with Mr. Obama. We cannot afford waiting for couple of months. And what we have to do now, we have to ensure that promises to differ terrorists from other opposition will be realized into live,” Peskov said.
He added that Moscow was expecting real cooperation with the new Washington administration on Syria, as simple data exchange was not enough.
Peskov had affirmed that the United States’ disability to separate terrorists from the so-called “moderate opposition” was the reason for the failure of agreements on Syria, pointing out that it is impossible to attain any political settlement in Syria without solving this issue.
