Beijing to Expand its Involvement in Political Efforts on Syria

China’s Special Envoy for Syria Xie Xiaoyan has announced that his country will expand its involvement in political efforts to halt fighting in Syria.

He was quoted today on the Associated Press as telling reporters that China can be a widely valued and trusted player in multilateral talks on Syria.

“China has expressed repeatedly that crisis in Syria can only be resolved through political settlement,” the envoy said, adding that military means will lead nowhere.

He called on Russia and the United States to exert efforts to resume talks on the “ceasefire”.

“We should fight terrorism indiscriminately, wherever it exists. We need to particularly fight the terrorist organizations listed by the United Nations including ISIS, al-Nusra Front and East Turkistan Movement,”  Xiaoyan concluded.

Last March, China appointed Xiaoyan as Special Envoy for Syria in order to contribute to enhancing Syrian-Syrian dialogue for resolving crisis and increasing contacts between concerned parties.
