GENEVA, (ST)-Speaker of the Syrian People’s Assembly Hadiya Abbas and Speaker of Russia’s Federation Council Valentina Matvienko on Thursday discussed ways to activate parliamentary cooperation to confront the spread of terrorism in the region and the entire world and to put an end to interventionist policies adopted by some countries in Syria.
Abbas said that the security of both Syria and Russia was interdependent, expressing hope that Moscow and Damascus would continue their dialogue to tackle terrorism.
“We hope that our friendly, brotherly relations would develop in order to reach a joint victory over terrorism,” Abbas said at her meeting with Matvienko in Geneva on the sidelines of the 135th Session of the Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly.
Matvienko stressed Russia’s firm support for Syria in the fight against terrorism which has become a big obstacle hindering political solution of the crisis in Syria.
She clarified that the Russian participation in the war on terrorism in Syria serves the attainment of political solution and can play a big role in ridding the world of this killer plague.
She went on to say that Russia was adherent to its principled stance in support for the Syrian people’s right to determine their own future without foreign intervention, thus it works to encourage dialogue among the Syrians on the one hand and fight terrorism, that threatens the future of the entire world, on the other.
The 135th Session of the IPU Assembly concluded its activities today after discussing, over five days, several issues relating to women participation in political life, human rights, parliaments’ role in preventing foreign intervention in sovereign countries’ internal affairs, disarmament and international cooperation to achieve sustainable development.
