GENEVA, (ST)- Fighting terrorism will lead to successful political solution that preserves Syria’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, Speaker of the Syrian People’s Assembly (parliament) Hadiya Abbas underscored in her speech during the meeting of 135th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly in Geneva on Monday.
“The talk about fighting terrorism and lifting the economic sanctions will lead to solving the humanitarian crisis in Syria through supporting political solution that embodies the Syrian people’s aspirations and is based on intra-Syrian dialogue without pre-conditions or foreign interference, Abbas said.
She affirmed the Syrian people’s determination to continue fighting the takfiri terrorism hitting their country and reiterated the Syrians’ adherence to their homeland despite attempts by some parties to undermine the Syrian state and dominate its resources.
Collective international efforts needed to eliminate terrorism
The PA Speaker urged collective international efforts to eliminate terrorism and called for supporting Syria’s war on terrorist organizations that have become a serious threat to all peoples of the world.
Addressing the participating parliamentarians, Abbas said “it is the right of the peoples of all the countries hit by terrorism to ask why the governments of your countries ignored some of their nationals’ travelling to Syria to fight alongside terrorist groups and receive training on committing terrorist attacks and then return to their original homeland to continue practicing their terrorism”.
She added the terrorist attacks that targeted civilians in several parts of the world provided clear evidence about the big threat and the savageness of the terrorism that has been invested by the governments of some countries to achieve their own agenda on the expense of peoples and human values.
Terrorists use civilians as human shields
According to Abbas, some of these governments opened their countries’ borders to allow tens of thousands of mercenary terrorists from all over the world to enter Syria where they committed atrocities and used civilians as human shields. Some others recruited, funded, armed and trained the terrorist groups. Also, Abbas said, some government dedicated their political, media and religious platforms to talk about the false legitimacy of the terrorist organizations by labeling them as “moderate opposition” or “armed moderate opposition” or “non-state armed groups”.
Syria was self-sufficient country before the crisis
Terrorism has turned the world into a big stage on which most horrible crimes and human rights violations are committed, said the PA Speaker, pointing out that ” five years and a half ago, Syria was among the most secure and stable countries of the world. It achieved self- sufficiency in food, medicine, health and education. Also, the Syrian citizens played effective role in political, economic, social and cultural life of their country and Syrian women enjoyed the right to access all domains of work including politics.”
Economic terrorism worsened Syrians’ life
Abbas went on to say that “the suffering of the Syrian people was worsened by another type of terrorism which is the hateful economic terrorism represented in the unilateral economic sanctions which targeted the Syrians’ livelihood and badly affected all aspects of life in Syria and caused the immigration of thousands of Syrians seeking better life in another place.”
Abbas said that the Syrian people calls on all peoples of the world represented by their parliaments to spare no effort as to end these sanctions because they violate human rights that “we must protect and enhance”.
She called for backing the Syrian people and supporting their steadfastness in the confrontation of terrorism.
