LAUSANNE, Switzeland, (ST)- Russian and US top diplomats Sergey Lavrov and John Kerry in addition to a number of foreign minister of some countries in the region including Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar plus Iran started a meeting in the Swiss city of Lausanne for talks on the situation in Syria.
UN Chief’s Special Envoy for Syria Staffan De Mistura is taking part in the meeting. Representatives of Egypt and Iraq were also expected to participate.
On Friday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said he pinned no special hopes on Lausanne meeting.
“I have no special expectations,” he told the media. “We would like to work in a concrete way and to see first to what degree our partners are prepared to comply with UN Security Council resolutions.”
On the sidelines of the talks Lavrov and Kerry held a meeting to discuss the ways of solve the crisis in Syria and reactivate the agreement on the cessation of hostilities in Syria.
The meeting was the first between the two ministers since the United States declared it was suspending bilateral channels with Russia established to sustain the September 9 agreement on the cessation of hostilities in Syria.
