NEW YORK, (ST)- The Security Council on Friday cancelled an urgent meeting that had been called to discuss the Russian-American agreement on Syria, at the request of both the United States and Russia, according to diplomats.
Russia’s Permanent Representative at the United Nations Vitaly Churkin said that meeting was cancelled because Washington has refused to publish the details of the truce deal.
France Press reported that during the scheduled meeting, US and Russian envoys were to present details of the joint agreement that calls for a “cessation of hostilities, the delivery of aid and joint targeting of Deash and Jabhat al-Nusra terrorists in Syria in addition to the resumption of the political process to solve the crisis in the country.
Russia seeks publishing the agreement and is pushing for the Security Council to endorse it in order to avoid any misinterpretations.
US Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov are due to attend the council talks to be held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly meeting on Wednesday.
