Putin, Russian Security Council Discuss Syria in Context of Russia-US Deal

MOSCOW- President Vladimir Putin of Russia discussed with the permanent members of the Russian Security Council on Monday the situation in Syria and a number of other issues, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

“The meeting discussed the situation in Syria in the context of the recent Russian-US agreements,” Peskov said, according to Itar Tass.

After the hours-long talks in Geneva on Friday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his US counterpart John Kerry reached a deal consisting of five documents aimed at reinstating “ceasefire” and laying the basis for resuming the process of political settlement in Syria. These documents include separating “opposition” from terrorists, carrying out joint airstrikes of Russia and the US, procedures of responding to possible “ceasefire” violations and the issues of delivering humanitarian assistance.

At the meeting the sides also discussed the recently conducted Kavkaz-2016 military drills and the summit of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, due late this week.

“Topical issues of the current social and economic agenda were discussed,” Peskov added.
