President Al-Assad to Greek Channel: Gunmen Who want to Abandon Weapons Will Get Amnesty

DAMASCUS, (ST)- President Bashar Al-Assad has stressed that gunmen who want to abandon their weapon and return to their normal life will get amnesty.

President Al-Assad made the remarks on Tuesday in reply to a question by the Greek ITV Channel reporter on whether President Al-Assad  will issue an amnesty after he achieves victory in the ongoing war.

“Amnesty has been an option available for terrorists to benefit from the very beginning of the terrorist war against the country,” said the President adding “what is most important is that victory won’t be mine, it will be the victory of the Syrian people, because the war has been waged against the Syrian people.”

“If they want to return to normal life and abandon their weapons they will get amnesty and I think we have been doing this for three years regardless the country’s win in the war,” President Al-Assad said.

He pointed out that amnesty is in effect in the country now and it is a good option to help all those who took up arms for different reasons return to normal life or to political life if they have their own agenda and in this case they can to go to political institutions, to ballot boxes or to any kind of political measures that are available in any country.

The Army General Command has sent text messages calling on gunmen in eastern Aleppo to give up their weapons and seek having their legal status  settled. It has urged citizens to join national reconciliations and expel foreign terrorists from their areas.

President Al-Assad has issued several amnesty decrees from which many gunmen have benefitted. As a result, the gunmen get their legal status settled and returned to  their normal life.
