DAMASCUS, (ST)- Archbishop of Cyprus Chrysostomos II, visiting Damascus, has stressed that he supports Syria and prays for peace in the country and for happiness to the Syrian people.
He made the remarks on Friday following a mass and prayers of thanks he presided over at the Mariamite Cathedral of Damascus. The Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch and All East Youhanna X Yazigi and a number of archbishops and priests took part in the prayers.
“We pray for peace and happiness in Syria,” Chrysostomos II said, stressing that by visiting Syria he is expressing solidarity with the Syrian people.
“Syria is the cradle of Christianity and I came here to have a close look at the life of the simple people of Syria and I have noticed much amity on their faces,” said the Archbishop of Cyprus.
On his part, Patriarch Yazigi hailed the brave stances of the Cypriot officials and men of religion in support for Syria and praised the strong ties between the Syrian and Cypriot peoples and churches.
He said “we also pray for the unity of Cyprus”.
Earlier in the day, a religious delegation led by archbishop Chrysostomos II arrived in Damascus on Friday on a five-day visit to Syria.
In a statement to reporters upon the delegation’s arrival, Chrysostomos II thanked the Syrian leadership and Patriarch Yazigi for the kind invitation, pointing out that he came to deliver a message to the Syrian people urging them to keep steadfast and adherent to their land.
