The events in Turkey point to the fact that there are deep contradictions within the society and the country’s military, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said.
ULAANBAATAR – Medvedev added that Moscow has to take steps to protect the interests of Russian citizens.
“At the same time what has happened shows that within the society and the army of the Turkish Republic there are very powerful, deep contradictions that have led to all these events. Time will show what will happen next. In any case, we must take measures to protect the interests of our citizens, as well as our companies,” Medvedev stressed, according to Sputnik.
Russian Embassy in Ankara Asks Turkey to Ensure Safety of Russian Citizens
The Russian Embassy sent a request to the Turkish authorities to ensure the safety of Russian citizens and Russian institutions in Turkey amid the coup attempt in the country, the press attache of the embassy said on Saturday.
The embassy is checking the information on possible incidents with Russian citizens during the recent events in Turkey, we keep in touch with other Russian missions. We asked the Turkish authorities to take all necessary measures to ensure the safety of Russian citizens and institutions in the Republic of Turkey,” Igor Mityakov told RIA Novosti.
He added that at the moment the embassy received no information about Russian citizens injured during the events in Turkey.
An attempted coup in Turkey was faltering on Saturday, hours after a faction of the military used tanks and helicopters in an ill-fated attempt to end the rule of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Prime Minister Binali Yildirim.
