Terrorist Groups’ Attacks Cause Huge Damage to Aleppo National Museum

ALEPPO, (ST)-The National Museum of Aleppo was attacked in the recent days by a large number of missiles and explosive bombs fired by Saudi and Turkish-backed terrorist extremist gangs. The attacks caused heavy material damage to the museum’s construction structure, according to the General Directorate of Antiquities and Museums (GDAM).

The GDAM, which condemned these systematic and brutal attacks on the National Museum of Aleppo and on other cultural heritage sites, clarified that damage caused to the museum included the partial destruction of the concrete ceiling in different parts of the museum, a big damage in infrastructure, exterior doors, the offices of employees and museum curators and the destruction of the generators room as well as parts of the Museum outer fence.

Director of Aleppo Antiquities and Museums Khaled al-Masri told SANA correspondent that the “museum’s collections of artifacts are in a good condition.”

The National Museum of Aleppo was founded in 193. It was decided in 1966 to expand the museum to host the growing number of exhibited items. The museum exhibits items from all historical periods in addition to important artifacts depicting the history of Aleppo and the world. It is one of the most important museums of the world in terms of the artifacts exhibited in its halls from BC era. It included five museums;  the Pre-history Museum, the Old  Eastern Museum, the Classical Museum, the Arab Islamic Museum and the Museum of Modern Art.

The archeological sites in Aleppo, particularly the UNESCO-listed old city, have been the target of systematic terrorist attacks by the foreign-backed takfiri groups that burnt historical souks, mosques and tried to attack the citadel of Aleppo.
