UN Resolutions Should be Implemented to Attain Stability in ME, Maintain U.N. Credibility: al-Jaafari
NEW YORK, (ST)-Israel has been ignoring all relevant United Nations resolutions concerning the occupied Syrian Golan, including the UN Security Council resolution No. 497 of 1981, Syria’s Permanent Representative at the United Nations Bashar al-Jaafari has underscored.
In a statement during the Security Council meeting Tuesday on the Situation in the Middle East, al-Jaafari said the Israeli occupation authorities continue to systematically violate human rights and carry on settlement activities in occupied Golan and they keep stealing Golan oil and water resources.
He added that the occupation authorities have confiscated thousands of dunums of occupied Golan lands for settlement purposes. And under the so-called “farms policy”, 750 new farms were being established in the occupied Syrian Golan and soon, some 750 families would be settling them.
He went on to say that many Syrians under occupation were arrested, referring, among many others, to Syrian freedom fighter Sidqi al-Maqt who spent 27 years in the Israeli jails before he was released in 2012 and was rearrested in February, 2015 for uncovering Israel’s support for the al-Qaeda-affiliated “Jabhat al-Nusra” terrorist organization and for the ISIS-affiliated “Liwa al-Yarmouk” terror group in occupied Golan.
All Israeli flagrant violations weren’t enough to raise the concerns of the U.N.
“All these violations, besides the provocative meeting of the Israeli government in the occupied Syrian Golan were not enough to raise the concern of the UN General Secretariat and political administration as well as the UN special coordinator for the Middle East Peace process,” al-Jaafrai asserted.
The Syrian diplomat pointed out that scores of resolutions were adopted over the years on the Palestine cause and the Palestinian people’s rights, but the occupation keeps refusing to implement them. He asked when Palestinians would enjoy life and dignity in their long-hoped-for independent State. He then asked when Israel would withdraw from Lebanese territory and from the Syrian Golan.
“Was it not time for influential international powers to find a formula for implementing United Nations resolutions?”, Al-Jaafari asked ,saying he wished to pose that question to governments keen on international law and the credibility of the United Nations.
Maintaining U.N. Credibility Necessitates Insistence on Implementing UN Resolutions
He affirmed that stability in the Middle East and maintaining the credibility of the United Nations necessitate that the Security Council should implement relevant resolutions on the occupied Syrian Golan through forcing the Israeli occupation to stop its aggressive practices against Golan people and to withdraw from all the occupied Syrian Golan to the June 4th 1967 lines.
Al-Jaafari also said he would not respond to “improper” comments about Syria by representatives of the United States and the European Union, stressing that they were a distraction from the agenda item at hand in order to ease pressure on Israel instead of work hard to solve the Arab-Israeli conflict and find a just and comprehensive settlement to the Palestinian cause.
Terrorism Backfires on its Supporters
He added that some European countries have supported takfiri terrorism in Syria and have taken part in shedding the blood of the Syrians by sending takfiris and mercenary terrorists to Syria. He noted that this takfiri terrorism, supported by European countries, are now backfiring on its supporters.
