Zakharova: Calls by Some US Diplomats for Targeting Syrian Army Positions Shocking

MOSCOW, (ST)- Spokesperson of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova has stressed that recent calls by some US State Department officials for targeting Syrian Army positions are shocking because they are made by people who are presumed to seek political solutions.

In a statement to SANA correspondent in Moscow on Wednesday, Zakharova said: “we can’t but be surprised about messages sent by some US State Department officials regarding the need to launch military strikes against Syria as a means to solve the crisis in the country.”

“What shocked us most was the fact that the calls for the strikes were made by diplomats who are presumed to seek political settlement”, Zakharova added, stressing that such calls by the diplomats confirm their lack of professional competence.

According to Zakharova, there are two camps in Washington; the first one calls for solving crises by military force and wars while the second one shows more wisdom and calls for diplomatic solutions to the crisis through talks.

She hoped that the second camp will prevail in the United States.

The Russian diplomat pointed out that Moscow has dealt with many crises in the Middle East and North Africa and saw how military solutions led to worsening the crises in Iraq, Libya, Yemen and other countries.

She pointed out  that countries of the world, including the United States, have recognized that the policy they had adopted was wrong.
