Syria calls for clear condemnation of airstrike within its borders
DAMASCUS,(ST)_Foreign and Expatriates Ministry denies claims that the Israeli airstrike targeted a Lebanon-bound convoy coming from Syria, stressing the airstrike targeted a scientific research center in Jamraya in Damascus Countryside.
In two identical letters sent to the International Security Council’s Head and the UN Secretary General, the ministry said: “On Wednesday’s dawn, January 30th, 2013, Israeli warplanes violated the Syrian airspace sneaking from the north of Al-Sheikh Mountain at a low altitude and below radars, and struck a scientific research center in Jamraya in Damascus countryside.”
“The airstrike in which two workers in the center martyred, and other five injured caused the destruction of the center.”
The ministry underscored that the Israeli aggression comes after the armed terrorist group’s failure, over the few past months, to seize the building (the center).
“Israel along with the enemies of the Syrian people have used their tools inside Syria to strike vital and military sites. They (the tools), and al-Qaeda-affiliated al-Nusra Front on top, targeted some military and vital sites and failed to strike a lot of them (sites) in the past months,” the letters read.
The FM added that these attempts to strike sites besides the Israeli direct aggression on the scientific center prove that Israel is the motive, beneficiary and sometimes the perpetrator of the terrorist attacks taking place in Syria, according to SANA.
It appealed to the UN Security Council to issue a clear condemnation of the blatant Israeli attack within the borders of a sovereign state, noting that this attack breaches the UN charter, international law, the Separation of Forces Agreement in 1974 and the relevant UN resolutions.
“The UNSC’s in action in deterring the Israeli attacks would be considered as the council’s failure to play the role it was tasked with by the UN Charter in preserving international peace and security in the region, and would lead to destabilize international security and peace in the region.”
The ministry said that Syria holds Israel and those who are protecting it in the council responsibility for this aggression, asserting Syria’s right to defend its land, and sovereignty.
In a relevant context, the ministry summoned today Commander of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force in the occupied Golan (UNDOF), Major-General IqbalSingha.
It informed him about its official condemnation of the Israeli violation of ‘Separation of Forces Agreement’ and its obligations, after an Israeli warplane violated the Syrian airspace and struck a scientific research center in Jamraya in Damascus countryside.
The ministry called upon the commander to take necessary procedures to brief the UN parties concerned with the dangerous Israeli violation to guarantee that it will not be repeated.
