Wide rejection of proposed federalism in north of Syria

There has been wide rejection of the proposal of putting in place a federal system in north of Syria over the past few days as it impinges on the Syrian state’s unity and it has nothing to do with the destiny of the Kurds.

The national unity gathering in Qameshli city, which includes hundreds of intellectuals and representatives of civil society and popular organizations, stressed yesterday that the plan of federalism in Syria’s north serves the ISIS, the al-Nusra Front and the world Zionism.

It denounced the plan declared by what it described as some persons representing themselves only, adding that the Syrian Arab army is the only guarantee for eliminating terrorism.

The gathering called on clergymen, popular organizations and clans in Hasaka province to confront the plan that poses a threat to the unity of Syria and to hold symposiums for explaining the danger of federalism and its negative impacts on the homeland and on the citizen.

“Absence of wisdom”

Further rejection of the plan was announced by the Kurdish National Movement for Peaceful Change which said that the plan contradicts the Syrian constitution and reflects the absence of wisdom in political action. 

“We are still in a state of war against terrorists in Syria, so it is not wise to declare such plan,” the movement clarified, calling on all Kurdish forces not to trust any U.S or western promises because they only work for their interests in the region.

The “People” Party affirmed that the proposed federalism impinges on Syria’s unity, pointing out that all the components of the Syrian people have the legitimate right to be represented in the inter-Syrian talks in Geneva.

Head of the ‘Qamh’ bloc Haytham Manna also rejected the proposal of federalism declared during the Rmilan meeting, asserting on his facebook page the need to build a democratic parliamentary state based on democratic decentralization, reconstruction and development, according to the Damascus-based al-Watan newspaper. 

The paper quoted the Kurdish Progressive Democratic Party as saying that the Rmilan meeting’s declaration has nothing to do with the destiny of the Kurds in Syria.
