Brazil Summit, EU Calls for Political Solution in Syria

BRASILIA, (ST)-   Deliberations of the sixth summit between Brazil and the European Union concluded last Thursday. The Brazilian capital, Brasilia, hosted the summit in the presence of President of Brazil, Dilma Rousseff, senior officials of the European Union represented by President of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy, and President of  theEuropean Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso.

The summit called for, in its final statement, the need to “put an immediate end to all acts of violence in Syria, allowing the start to the political process in the hands of the Syrians themselves, associated with the support of the international community.”

The leaders in Brazil and Europe agreed that “the current situation in Syria may have negative consequences that can’t be predictable on the stability of the Middle East and international peace and security,” stressing the need to provide the international community the necessary support for the task of the UN envoy to Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, to find a political solution to the crisis on the basis of Geneva statetment.
