There was No Need to Cut Relations with Syria: Tunisian Government Spokesman

TUNIS, (ST)-Official Spokesman of the Tunisian government Khaled Shaukat has stressed that his country supports all initiatives aiming at preserving the unity of the Syrian soil and that it is against interference in the Syrian internal affairs.

In a special interview with “Facts Online” e-newspaper on Sunday, Shaukat said “I believe that our foreign policy towards the crisis in Syria has radically changed and that the Tunisian diplomacy has become more balanced, realistic and flexible enough to go in compatible with our abilities, interests and potentials.”

“We have said that the Syrian issue is a pure Syrian affair and there was no need to cut relations with Syria,” Shaukat added, pointing out that the Tunisian Consulate in Syria has been reopened because of the presence of a Tunisian community in the country.

The Tunisian official went on to say that “it is necessary to continue the approach, of which the Tunisian diplomacy is known, through no interfering in brotherly countries’ internal affairs and through backing all good initiatives that preserve the unity of the Syrian soil and help the country get out of its crisis as soon as possible.”
