Eliminating terrorism, the real path into establishing stability

The upcoming Geneva talks will realize the Syrians’ interests, particularly in terms of eliminating terrorism which is waning under the blows dealt to it by the Syrian Army and the forces supporting it.

Eliminating terrorism is the real path into establishing stability, reconstruction and building a real partnership among the Syrians.

World countries should follow in Russia’s footsteps and coordinate with the Syrian and Iraqi government in the counter terrorism efforts on the ground. This is the only way to get rid of terrorism before it becomes aggravated and spread to other countries.

Some Arab, Islamic and Western countries have invested in cross-border terrorism striking Syria and Iraq for the sake of achieving private interests. This exploitation goes against the commitments of non-interference in countries’ affairs. It is also a clear breach of the Security Council’s resolutions on counter terrorism, including those No. 1373 of 2001 and 2170 and 2178 of 2014.

The international community should commit to fighting terrorism away from politicization and double-standards and by direct cooperation and coordination with the Syrian government, and they should provide support for the Syrian government which is fighting terrorism on behalf of the world.

Supported by the governments of Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey, the terrorist groupsare perpetrating atrocious crimes against innocent people in an attempt to raise their morale in the aftermath of the blows dealt to them by the Syrian Arab army. The terrorist groups are suffering repeated defeats at the hands of the Syrian Arab Army in many areas.

ISIS hordes attacked al-Bghailiye suburb on January 16th, breaking into houses and homes and murdering, slaughtering, and shooting innocent civilians, claiming the lives of more than 280 civilians, most of them women, children, and elderly people. In addition, the terrorist organizations abducted around 400 peaceful civilians from al-Bghailiye and transported them to other areas.

The two terrorist bombings that took place in Homs city last Tuesday and other similar terrorist crimes require an immediate and stern condemnation from Security Council and taking deterrent actions against the states that support and fund terrorism. These bombings were carried out at a time when the date for holding the Geneva 3 meeting, which seeks to push towards a political solution for the crisis in Syria, is approaching.

These atrocious crimes constitute a continuation of the barbaric and methodical terrorist acts committed by terrorist groups in Syria, groups that are supported by well-known regional and international states that employ terrorism to serve their personal political interests and irresponsible agendas. These crimes also constitute a response to the political efforts being exerted to find a political solution by Syrians and to the success of national reconciliation efforts.

The crimes and massacres committed by terrorist organizations like ISIS, Jabhat al-Nusra, Jaish al-Islam, al-Jabha al-Islamiya, Jaish al-Fateh, Ahrar al-Cham, and the “Free Army” wouldn’t have taken place without the constant arming, equipping, funding, and logistic support provided to terrorists by the governments of certain states, especially Turkey, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

Such terrorist acts are being committed before the very eyes of the US coalition and the other states that cooperate with it. This coalition proved its failure and hypocrisy, while the Syrian Arab Army and the Russian Aerospace Forces are waging an undaunted war on terrorism.

The Security Council should assume its responsibilities regarding counter-terrorism by implementing relevant resolutions and taking all deterrent measures against the states, individuals, associations, and establishments that violate those resolutions, specifically the regimes of Turkey, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia, and a number of Western states that continue to conspire against Syria.
