Moscow says Biden’s Remarks about “Military Solution” in Syria Have Destructive Nature

MOSCOW, (ST)-A Russian diplomatic source has criticized US Vice President Joe Biden’s remarks about “military solution” in Syria, saying these remarks have a destructive nature that may lead to undermining all the efforts being exerted to attain political solution to the crisis in Syria.

On Saturday in a meeting with Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu in Ankara, Biden said that his country and Turkey are ready for military solution in Syria if political solution won’t work.

The Russian diplomatic source said in statements reported by Russia Today website that “it is strange to hear such remarks in a time when all countries are trying to find political settlement in Syria…such threats have a destructive nature.”

Biden’s remarks came amid intensive international efforts being exerted to hold talks between the Syrian government and opposition in Geneva this month. They aim at placing obstacles to hinder the process.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his US counterpart John Kerry yesterday discussed on phone the issue of forming a widely-represented opposition delegation to Geneva talks.

Kerry in a press conference with the Saudi foreign minister in Riyadh said “we are sure that positive initiatives within the coming days may lead to holding the talks under the patronage of the UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan De Mistura.”  He pointed out that these talks would be the first step in the process of implementing Geneva 1 document.
