Haikal: Egypt Was Wrong to Leave Syria Alone in Confrontation of Dangers

CAIRO, (ST)- Renowned Egypt writer and journalist Mohamed Hassanein Heikal has stressed that Egypt was wrong to leave Syria alone in  the face of the ongoing terrorist war instead of backing the Syrian state.

Interviewed by the Egyptian CBC Channel, Haikal said “Egypt didn’t perform its national duty towards Syria which found itself alone in the confrontation of terrorism. This passivity caused growing concern in Syria and allowed international forces to interfere in the country.”

“When Syria is in danger, the first and simplest thing to do is to assure the Syrian state that Egypt is supporting it,” he pointed out.

He went on to say that Egypt committed a big mistake by accepting ceasefire in October Liberation War in 1973, because “Egypt joined Syria in the war against Israel but it abandoned the fight and made a peace agreement with the enemy, a matter that foiled the opportunities of attaining comprehensive peace in the region.”

Haikal reiterated that the “Middle East and its heart, Syria, are facing a huge danger not by Iran as others like to say but by Israel through its evil schemes and aspirations in the region.”

He called for enhancing dialogue and contacts with the Syrians including the government and the people.
