A 16-day campaign to end violence against woman has been launched by the United Nations Population Fund [UNFPA] in 6 provinces in Syria under the title “Educating woman builds peace”.
The campaign, which was started on November 25th with the participation of Information Ministry and 7 local partners, will hold 180 activities within the program of social awareness in provinces of Damascus, Aleppo, Homs, Hama, Lattakia and Tartous.
It will shed light on the positive impacts of educating woman in Syria as she plays a pivotal role in each and every fields of life.
Social Affairs Minister Rima al-Qaderi told reporters after opening one of the campaign’s activities in the Damascus Opera House on November 3, that Syria’s interest in all social issues has not stopped despite the war being waged on the country.
While the UNFPA’s Representative in Syria Massimo Diana declared that violence against woman is violence against humanity. “Ending violence against woman is everyone’s responsibility.”
He added that there must be a focus on the Syrian people’s steadfastness, especially women and girls, and their ability to overcome the nearly five-year old crisis in the country.
“Syrian people will rebuild their country after the achievement of peace in it,” Diana stressed.
On his part, Director of Relief and Development Center in the Syriac Catholic Archbishopric Shadi Fadel said that violence against woman increases crises and wars and it is being practiced in most world countries. “It is important to make people aware that civilization, love and peace in the world depend on woman.”

25 November, is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, which calls for global action to end gender-based violence, gender discrimination and gender inequality. Yet even after decades of commitment to promote the rights and security of women, violence continues – often with impunity.
One in three women will experience physical or sexual abuse in her lifetime, most often at the hands of someone she knows. And the consequences do not stop there. Women subjected to physical or sexual violence face a cascade of ill effects, according to the UNFPA’s Executive Director Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin.
This year, orange made a splash to mark the 16 days o activism to end violence against woman, from 25 November to 10 December. The colour of the Secretary-General’s unite campaign symbolizes a brighter future for all women and girls.
