Mikdad: Syria committed to its obligations regarding OPCW agreement

The Hague – Deputy Foreign and Expatriates Minister Fayssal Mikdad affirmed Syria’s continued commitment to its obligations in accordance with the Chemical Weapons’ convention agreement, SANA reported.

Meeting Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation Georgy Kalamanov on the sidelines of the 20th session of the Conference of the States Parties to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) being held in Hague from 30 November to 4th of December, Mikdad expressed appreciation for the cooperation and coordination between Russia and Syria on issues related to Syrian chemical weapons elimination.

 Mikdad stressed the importance of efforts exerted by Russia in the fight against the Islamic State (ISIS) terrorist organization which perpetrates terrorist acts including the use of the chemical weapons against the civilians in Syria and Iraq.

Kalamanov, in turn, appreciated the pivotal progress achieved by Syria regarding the convention, hailing the Syrian government’s cooperation with the OPCW teams.

He called on the OPCW and its member states to concentrate on the danger posed by terrorist organizations’ possession of the chemical weapons, and keeping away from politicizing issues related to the file of Syrian chemical weapons elimination.

Kalamanov expressed his country’s readiness to cooperate with the Syrian government in the fight against terrorism.
