Ex-French Premier Urges Restoring Diplomatic Ties with Syria, Supporting the Syrian Army in the Fight against ISIL

PARIS, (ST)-Former French Prime Minister Francois Fillon has called for restoring diplomatic ties with Syria and urged supporting the Syrian Arab Army, the main force that is able to defeat the terrorists of the so-called “Islamic State in Iraq and Levant” (ISIL).

Interviewed by the “France Inter” Radio, Fillon said “we analyzed the crisis in Syria the wrong way. We thought it was a people’s revolution, but it wasn’t. There was no need to close the French Embassy in Damascus; rather we had to keep the least French diplomatic representation in Syria”, noting that the mistake committed in Libya indicated that the West can’t interfere militarily without chaos risks.

Fillon reiterated the importance of establishing a global anti-ISIL alliance and supporting the Syrian Arab Army and Hizbollah resistance forces, the only ground troops which are actually fighting ISIL terrorist organization.

“By establishing this alliance, we should support those forces which can fight ISIL. The Americans never fought this terrorist organization seriously and France, whether in cooperation with the U.S. or not, must go and fight ISIL.”Fillon said.

He pointed out that “we didn’t see the Syrian opposition forces fighting the terrorist organization; they only fought the Syrian army forces because they are not the kind of forces that are able to defeat ISIL.”

He renewed his call on the French government to specify priorities, lift the sanctions it imposed on Russia and restore diplomatic ties with Damascus as to facilitate technical contacts with the Syrian Army and cooperation with Iran and Hizbollah.

Fillon described Hizbollah as the force that actually protects Lebanon and the only side that can guarantee Lebanon’s stability and development.

He reiterated that Turkey has become a big problem as facts indicate that all the oil sold by ISIL goes directly to the Turkish refineries and this proves the Turkish collusion in this issue.

“ISIL has become an international crisis and a new sort of a party that seeks dominating a part of the world and ensuring the funds and arms necessary for its continuity, thereby posing a great danger to the entire world,” Fillon said.

Fillon was the Prime Minister of France between 2009 and 2012. Now he is an MP at the French National Assembly.
