UN Special Envoy for Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed said Iran is an influential country in the Middle East which has a determining role in the fight against terrorism in the region.
He made the remarks in a meeting here on Wednesday with the Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab-African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian during which they reviewed the latest developments in Yemen and the outcome of the UN envoy’s consultations with representatives of the political parties and warring sides.
In the meeting held prior to the second round of inter-Yemeni negotiations, the Iranian diplomat welcomed Cheikh Ahmed’s intensive and continued efforts to restore stability and tranquility in Yemen and hoped that with the contribution of regional countries, the new round of talks will lead to a durable agreement.
The UN envoy briefed Amir-Abdollahian on the his recent consultations with certain countries and conflicting parties in Yemen and said, ‘After eight months of war, all sides inside and outside Yemen have reached the point that the crisis does not have military solution and that the human plight in Yemen has approached a hazardous stage.’
Iran pillar of regional stability, says Velayati
On the other hand in Beirut, senior advisor to Iran’s Supreme Leader has referred to Iran as the backbone of stability and security in the region.
Ali Akbar Valayati made the remarks in a recent interview with the Lebanese daily As Safir.
Iran has succeeded to abort US plans in Syria, Lebanon and Iraq by increasing necessary support for the government oh Syria and President Bashar al-Assad with the help of the Hezbollah of Lebanon and Iraqi forces, Velayati said.
He stressed that Tehran would never give up supporting President Bashar al- Assad, Prime Minister of Iraq Haider al-Abadi and the resistance movements in Lebanon and Palestine.
Although the current situation in the region is not acceptable, Iran is optimistic about a better future, said the official.
Today, Iran has become a great country with a strong military and security power that would prevent all from even daring to think of an attack on the country, Velayati said referring to Iran as the first power in the region.
He further noted that relations with other countries of the world countries should be based on mutual respect.
