Russia is Key to Bringing Peace to Syria – King of Jordan

Foreign militants are a serious problem for Europe and even more serious for Russia, who is dealing with the threat of ISIS, Jordan’s King Abdullah II said.

Russia is the key player in the peaceful settlement to the Syrian conflict, Jordan’s King Abdullah II bin Al-Hussein said, according to the Russian Sputnik News.

“I have always said, for the past five or six years, that for a political solution in Syria, Moscow is key. They are the ones that can give the guarantees to the regime that they have a stake in the future,” he said in an interview with Euronews.

Abdullah II underscored that the threat of radical militants, including the Islamic State (ISIL) terrorist group, is a major concern for both Europe and Russia.

“If the Europeans are dealing with a major concern of foreign fighters, that is doubly so for Russia. They have a major problem with foreign fighters also, so they need to deal with the threat of ISIL themselves,” he said.

On September 30, Russia launched airstrikes against ISIL positions in Syria at the request of country’s President Bashar al-Assad. Meanwhile, a US-led international coalition has been conducting airstrikes against ISIL in Syria since September 2014. The US-led operation has not been authorized by the UN and coordinated with the Syrian government.
