Merkel: President Al-Assad’s Participation in Efforts Aiming to Attain Political Solution in Syria Necessary

 BERLIN, (ST)- German Chancellor Angela Merkel has stressed that President Bashar Al-Assad’s participation in the efforts aiming to attain a successful political solution to the crisis in Syria is necessary.

Reuters cited the German Chancellor as saying to “Deutschland” radio on Sunday that to be successful, political settlement in Syria needs the participation of representatives from the Syrian government and opposition in addition to other concerned parties.

 “Russia, the United States, Saudi Arabia and Iran in addition to Germany, France and Britain can play a pivotal role in this respect,” Merkel clarified.

She believed that “military efforts are necessary in Syria but they won’t put an end to the war there, so it is necessary to launch a political process; a process that hasn’t gone well so far.”
