Al-Mouallem meets Zarif, Ban Ki-moon

NEW YORK,(ST)_Foreign and Expatriates Minister Walid al-Mouallem has separately met his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif and the United nations Secretary -General Ban Ki-moon on the sidelines the 70th session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

The talks between al-Mouallem and Zarif dealt with the situation in the region in general and in Syria in particular, according to the official news agency (SANA).

The agency quoted al-Mouallem as saying that Iran’s support for Syria will help defeating the errorist attack and putting an end to the countries conspiring against Syria.

On his part, Zarif hailed the steadfastness of Syrian people and leadership in confronting the terror attack, which is supported by regional and western countries.

“Syria’s steadfastness must be supported…Iran welcomes Russia’s support for Syria,” the Iranian FM said, affirming that his country will go ahead with supporting Syria.

The second meeting between al-Mouallem and Banki-moon zeroed in on the mission of UN envoy for Syria Staffan De Mistura and the implementation of UN resolutions on counterterrorism.

Al-Mouallem told Ban Ki-moon that counterterrorism must be a priority in the UNSC because it is impossible to reach a political solution to crisis in Syria before defeating terrorism in it.  

He underlined the need for deterring the countries and parties that fund, arm, train and harbor terrorists.

On his part, Ban Ki-moon stressed the importance of reaching a political solution that serve ambitions of Syrian people, hopping that Syria will continue cooperation with de Mistura.
