DAMASCUS, (ST)_ President Bashar al-Assad on Thursday granted the Syrian Order of Merit of excellent degree to archeologist Khaled al-Asaad, after death, for his great achievements in archeology, according to Legislative Decree No. 229 for 2015.
Al-Ass’ad, born in Palmyra in 1934, has a BA in History and a diploma in Education from Damascus University. In 1962, he worked as the Director of Palmyra Antiquities and then as Secretary of Palmyra National Museum from 1963 to 2003. He also made several important archeological discoveries in Palmyra.
On August 18th, the terrorist organization calling itself the “Islamic State in Iraq and Levant (ISIL) beheaded the chief archeologist Khaled al-Ass’ad in the square of Palmyra National Museum. The horrible crime was condemned by many countries and international organizations.
