Parliament Speaker: Syrian-Egyptian relations are only guarantor of Arab national security

DAMASCUS – Speaker of the People’s Assembly Mohammad Jihad al-Laham met on Tuesday an Egyptian media delegation visiting Syria.

“The Syrian-Egyptian relations, which we hope will regain its usual momentum, are the only guarantor of the Arab national security,” said al-Laham, calling on the delegation members to contribute to acquainting the Egyptian public opinion with the truth of what is happening in Syria and exposing the disinformation targeting the Syrian state.

He added that what historically binds Syria and Egypt on the popular and official levels cannot be erased by “short-sighted decisions made by officials who came to power at a moment of vacuum and have done harm to the Syrian and Egyptian peoples”, SANA reported.

Al-Laham said the correcting of the political and leadership track in Egypt and the toppling of the Muslim Brotherhood Movement is the best proof that the Egyptian people do not accept to be governed out of the approach of Arabism.

In response to questions by the delegation members about the political initiatives to resolve the crisis in Syria, al-Laham stressed that Syria is open to any initiative or political solution that would maintain its territorial integrity, sovereignty and independent decision away from any foreign interference.

In a press statement following the meeting, Mohamed Hussein Abu al-Hassan, Assistant Editor-in-Chief of al-Ahram Newspaper, said the delegation’s visit aims at having a firsthand experience of the situation in Syria and conveying the true image of the events in it to the Egyptian people.

The delegation includes media figures from Al-Akhbar, Al-Masri al-Youm and Al-Ahram newspapers and al-Nahar and al-Ahram TV channels.
