Lavrov calls political dialogue in Syria amid terrorist threat

Moscow calls for the soonest beginning of political dialogue on Syria with the purpose of preventing the spread of the terrorist threat in the Middle East, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Monday.

“Today, when the terrorist threat is imminent and it is spreading far outside of its borders, there should be no more excuses for stalling political processes [in Syria],” he said at a meeting with Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem in Moscow.

He noted that Russia would continue to support Syria in the struggle against the terrorist threat.

“We express our solidarity with the struggle of the Syrian people against terrorist groups, we are rendering comprehensive assistance so that they are able to resist this threat, and we will continue to do so,” Lavrov underlined.

The Russian foreign minister highlighted Russia’s interaction with other countries in the resolution of the Syrian conflict. “We are actively working with other countries and regions, European nations and the United States, so that we can actually see the priority of our common course in the Middle East,” Lavrov said.
