Al-Halaki: Need for International Cooperation to Confront Terrorism

DAMASCUS, (ST)_ Prime Minister Dr. Wael Al-Halaki discussed with Zainab Hawa Bangura, Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict, and the accompanying delegations cooperation between Syria and UN to confront sexual violence practiced against women and children in areas controlled by arms terrorist groups.

Al-Halaki reviewed steps taken by the government to eliminate the violence against women,  which included many regulations adopted by the government related for  combating human Trafficking and joining the international agreements on anti-discrimination and women’s rights.

He pointed out to the violation perpetrated the armed terrorists groups including  rape of women and children, aggressions against religions and spread Takfiri mentality, stressing that Syrian woman proved its ability to withstand in the face of terrorism.

From her part, Bangura appreciated efforts exerted by Syrian government in protecting women and children and easing the negative impact of the Syrian crisis to them.

She pointed out to the importance of strengthen the cooperation between the two sides in adding plans and joint programs in this domain.

Ealier Bangura met with interior minister Gen. Mohammad al-Shaar who stressed that Syria is always committed to all international laws and customs.

“Syrian Arab Army and interior ministry are defending Syrians’ interests and work with all means to protect its citizens from risks including sexual violence,” The minister said

He added that the terrorist organizations in some areas in Syria are practicing sexual violence against women and children.

“These practices are known to all the countries in the world including the international organizations which investigate the facts in Syria and the countries of the regions,” he added.

He concluded that the ministry is helping and supporting all the international organizations and protecting their members to be able to do their duty in witnessing the reality for what is happening in Syria.”

Meanwhile, Minster of Social affairs Dr. Kinda Al-Shammat discussed with the UN official efforts exerted by the government to protect women who have been subjected to serious violation by the Armed Terrorist Groups.

The minister stressed the importance of rehabilitation and to provide the needed care to the victims of violations to be real partners in building the society.

Bangura for her part pointed out that she visit Syria to have a close look on the Syrian women status and the services provided to them stressing that efforts are exerted in cooperation with the Syrian government to take practical steps in handling the issue of violence against the women.”
