Planning and International Cooperation Authority, WFP Signed Agreement on “Syrian Food Security Assessment”
DAMASCUS,(ST)_ The Planning and International Cooperation Authority and WFP yesterday signed a draft document entitled “household food security assessments in Syria” through a food security monitoring system to be executed periodically.
Chief of Planning and International Cooperation Authority Rima Qadri told SANA that the project aims to enhance the understanding of the impact of the crisis in Syria on the food security situation of affected families and identify and develop recovery responsesappropriate to support families and re-establish livelihoods to improve food security and provide data to support building a genuine partnership with farmers and other stakeholders in the private sector.
Qadri pointed out that the first phase of the project will be implemented within six months and data will be updated every four months by national and technical expertise by a steering committee chaired by the Commission, and another technical committee headed by the Central Bureau of Statistics. “
For his part, WFP Representative and Country Director in Syria Matthew Holingorth said that cooperation between WFP and the Syrian government has been going on for 50 years, during which concentration focused on developmental projects, livelihoods and community development pointing to “providing humanitarian aid to nearly 250.4 million Syrian beneficiaries.”
He underlined the importance of the project for better guide of WFP projects, have access to beneficiaries, the impact of the crisis in Syria on the affected persons and markets and market development by focusing on developmental projects.
On WFP plan in the next phase, Holingorth said that : ” focus in the next phase will be on the agricultural sector for re-production cycle and to provide support to local communities to accelerate production,” pointing out that WFP does not focus on the numbers as much as on access to the most citizens in need, commending the Syrian government cooperation with WFP for the delivery of aid to all those in need.
