Al-Mikdad Stresses Syria Pressing ahead with Program of Destroying Chemical Facilities, Blames UN, OPCW for Delay

MOSCOW – Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Faisal al-Mikdad has stressed that Syria is pressing ahead with the program of destroying the facilities manufacturing chemicals, pointing out that the delay in completing this mission is the fault of the United Nations and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), not Damascus.

In a statement to the Russian Sputnik news agency on Thursday, Al- Mikdad said “we have destroyed three tunnels and started with the fourth to end all the tunnels soon. But the hangars need equipments that should be provided by the projects management of the UN General Secretariat, which means that the delay is not our fault, but the fault of the United Nations and certain parties that are members of the OPCW.

“We hope to destroy the chemical facilities as soon as possible and before the set date,” Al-Mikdad added.

At the end of October 2014, the OPCW reported that nearly 98 percent of the “chemical weapons” removed from Syria had been destroyed.
