GENEVA,(ST)_ Swiss former prosecutor Carla Del Ponte stressed that President Bashar al-Assad is the only partner in order to reach a political solution to the crisis, noting that the situation in Syria is improving now.
Del Ponte, who is also is a member of the UN Commission to investigate human rights violations in Syria, reiterated in an interview with the Swiss RTS Info TV that “the solution is impossible without President Assad,” pointing out to the great popularity he enjoys on the ground in Syria.
Earlier on Sunday, the US Secretary of State John Kerry acknowledged in a statement to the US news network, CBS News, the necessity that his country should negotiate with President al-Assad in order to end the war in Syria.
Del Ponte made it clear that “ she joins the many voices that believe that the solution to the crisis in Syria lies in dialogue and negotiation with the Syrian leadership which is the only option,” pointing to increase in the number of voices which believe in the need to engage and cooperate with the Syrian leadership.
“This is only possible with the presence of President al-Assad in power,” she emphasized, noting that ” president Assad enjoys a power and huge popularity, and without him negotiation is impossible.”
She indicated the change of the situation in Syria and on Syrian territory.
Earlier in 2014, Del Ponte confirmed that terrorist acts carried out by extremist groups in Syria, such as al-Nusra Front and Daesh and foreign mercenaries cause great suffering for the Syrian people, that any human being can not endure, where they carry out acts of murder, torture and besieged cities.
