Jaafari: “Independent Inquiry Committee” Created for Political Purposes, Serving Terrorism Supporters

NEWYORK,(ST)_ Syria’s Permanent Representative to the UN Dr. Bashar al-Jaafari stressed that the Syrian government has always expressed reservations about the work of the so-called “Independent Inquiry Commission ” established at the decision of the Human Rights Council, adding that the committee is biased and formed for political purposes and hidden agenda, serving those who support terrorism in Syria.

Jaafari said in a press statement after the informal meeting of the UN Security Council with members of the so-called “Independent Inquiry Commission on human rights violations committed in Syria that ” this informal meeting was held outside the Security Council, and thus represents the views of its speakers, pointing out that the ” Independent Inquiry Commission “did not visit Syria, and its testimonies relied on some people from outside Syria, especially those in camps in Turkey, Jordan and Lebanon, besides it still ignores all abundant reports and information provided by her Syrian government for years, as an evidence of the extent of bias, and being not part of the solution to help Syria to counter terrorism striking it.

al-Jaafari indicated that said the Commission implements policies and views of some influential sides at the Human Rights Council and the UN Security Council in order to tarnish the image of the Syrian government.

He pointed to the 500-page book prepared by the Syrian government, including information on foreign terrorists who were killed in Syria during just one month, of October 2013, explaining that the book contains information about and nationalities, names and pictures of those who were fighting the Syrian government, including nationalities from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Libya, Egypt and from European, Asian and African countries.

On the terrorism conference, which was held few days ago in Washington, al-Jaafari said: “we did not attend the conference, which was held outside the framework of the UN, and was not an international World Conference. Rather a gathering of a number of UNSC member states, and like other conferences held outside the United Nations, including conferences on disarmament of nuclear weapons and others.”

Jaafari indicated that the US administration did not invite governments concerned to attend the conference, including the government of Syria, although the Iraqi and Syrian governments and other governments, are mostly concerned with the phenomenon of terrorism which is spread in the world.

Jaafari added that most weapons that were brought from Libya to Syria came across Lebanon, Turkey and Jordan, as confirmed by the report of the UN Commission on combating terrorism noting the current state of chaos in Libya that should be addressed.
