New York (ST)_ Syria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Dr. Bashar al-Jaafari, demanded the UN to take responsibility and deal with “Israel” continued occupation of the Syrian Golan since 1967, in risking the Syrian citizens under occupation a bitter reality that can not be tolerated.
“The UN has to deal with this reality in the occupied Syrian Golan in implementation of its relevant resolutions, especially UN Security Council resolution 497 for 1981,” Jaafari said in a speech yesterday during a session of the UN Security Council on the situation in the Middle East.
He indicated the UN’s inability to compel Israel to implement these decisions, including decisions to stop the systematic Israeli violations of human rights ,ending the settlement policy, terrorism and repression, racial discrimination and arbitrary detention against the Syrian citizens under occupation , stealing the Golan’s natural resources including water and the colonial oil and gas projects , noting the recent decision taken by Israeli Supreme Court to lift the ban on drilling for oil exploration in the occupied Syrian Golan in a clear violation of the international law. “
He indicated that the ” international silence about these Israeli practices ,especially its alliance with herds of terrorists which have been fighting for the destruction in Syria , supported by the Israeli warplanes repeatedly attacks on the Syrian territories, in violation of international law and the disengagement agreement of 1974 , a matter which increased tension in the region to unprecedented levels. “
Jaafari stressed that, despite the difficult conditions experienced by Syria, the Golan was and will remain a Syrian land , that we fight for its full restoration until June 1967 borders, adding that this right is not subject to negotiation nor bargaining , and that the Israeli actions can change nothing, including the so-called decision to annex the Golan, which is in fact null and void and have no legal effect, in accordance with UN relevant resolutions , especially UN Security Council resolution No. 497 of 1981.
‘What we confirm on the inevitability of Israel’s withdrawal from the occupied Syrian lands is applied to the occupied Palestinian territories and other occupied territories in southern Lebanon,” Jaafari underscored.
Jaafari pointed out that the UN bears a historical and legal responsibility towards the establishment of an independent Palestinian state which enjoys full sovereignty over its entire national territory on the basis of UN Resolution 181 of 1947, provided for the partition of Palestine and Resolution 273 of 1949, which set the terms of admitting “Israel” to the UN membership , as to comply with Resolution 181 provided for establishment of a Palestinian state and Israel to abide by provisions of UNSC resolution 194 of 1948, provided for the return Palestinian refugees to their homes.
Jaafari continued that despite all inhuman Israeli practices against the Palestinians, “there are members at the UN Security Council , who still deny the Palestinians even to claim their most basic rights, including the establishment of their state on their national soil and to set a date for ending the Israeli occupation , rather these members continue to protect Israel from being held accountable for its unjust , illegal and aggressive policy , “Jaafari said.
