Syrian Industry Vandalized by Terrorism- UNIDO Conference

VEINNA,(ST)_ In conclusion of its 42nd session held yesterday in Vienna, the UN Industrial Development Organization UNIDO board adopted several decisions  that  strengthen the Organization’s role in providing assistance to developing countries to achieve industrial development.

Syria’s  permanent representative to the UN and international organizations in Vienna, Ambassador Bassam Sabbagh spoke  during the meeting  about  the  systematic destruction the Syrian industry  has been suffering  by  barbaric terrorism, which targeted industrial cities of Aleppo , Damascus and other Syrian factories owned by the public and private sectors and looting and destruction acts against the  Syrian industrial facilities, referring to acts of  looting machinery and stocks , raw  and produced  materials of Aleppo factories  and transported  them illegally  to be  sold cheaply in Turkey.

He stressed that the suffering of the industrial sector in Syria is not limited to destruction and theft but also includes  the destruction of  power transmission lines in addition to illegal unilateral economic measures imposed by certain  countries against Syria, which put obstacles before Syrian industrialists to import raw materials and export products, transportation, and insurance measures, stressing  Syria ‘s  urgent need for UNIDO Member States support to expand the scope of bilateral  cooperation, especially in the  rehabilitation and reconstruction of the Syrian industrial  sectors affected by terrorist acts.

Ambassador Sabbagh reviewed  the reality of cooperation between Syria and UNIDO, as framed  in   the industrial modernization and development program agreement in Syria , which set a comprehensive strategy to modernize the Syrian industry in all sectors.

Syria was elected to UNIDO  Board for a four year- period, during UNIDO General Conference, which was held in Lima, Peru in December 2013.
