Al-Moallem in Moscow for Talks with Lavrov on Situation in Syria

SOCHI, (ST)-Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Walid al-Moallem today morning arrived in the Russian capital Moscow in a two-day work visit at the invitation of his counterpart Sergei Lavrov.

On the eve of the visit, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that “the talks between al-Moallem and Lavrov will focus on the situation in Syria which continues to witness escalating tension and danger by terrorist and extremist groups mainly Daesh and al-Nousra front which have declared what they called a caliphate state on wide areas in Syria and Iraq and are imposing inhuman rules that have nothing to do with Islam.”

The statement pointed out “Moscow believes that confronting terrorism and extremism, which threaten the security and stability of the entire world, is a top priority,” stressing that the main part of terrorism fighting process is done by the Syrian government, while the anti-terror strikes, carried out by the US-led coalition, have scored limited results.

“Effective International terrorism fighting isn’t possible without strict adherence to the rules of the international law, particularly the principles of respecting states’ sovereignty and the non interference in the internal affairs of these states,” the statement added.
