NEW YORK,(ST)_ Syria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Dr. Bashar al-Jaafari said that the Israeli occupation exercises the worst human rights and policies of repression, arbitrary detention and racial discrimination against the Syrians in the occupied Syrian Golan.
In a session for the UN General Assembly to discuss the situation in the Middle East, Jaafari explained that Israel added a new crime against the Syrians by supporting terrorists in the separation line area, which led to temporarily evacuation of UNDOF troops from its sites as a result of repeated attacks.
Jaafari read out a letter from a Syrian citizen living in the occupied part of the Syrian Golan confirming cling of the Syrians in the occupied Golan to their homeland Syria, pointing to Israeli violations of human right of the Syrians to their lands and waters in the occupied Golan since 1967, noting that this letter reflects the situation of the Syrian people living under Israeli occupation since 1967and the Israeli recent support for terrorists extremist groups in the buffer zone in the Syrian Golan, including the treatment of wounded terrorists in Israeli hospitals. “
” Recent developments in that area, which prompted UNDOF to evacuate some of their positions temporarily did not come by chance, but to confirm what we have been warning of the support given by certain regimes, including Israel to al-Qaeda linked terrorists in the area of separation, did not only constitute a flagrant violation of the separation of forces agreement and international law UN resolutions, but also endangered the lives of UNDOF personnel and undermined the mandate of UNDOF and its ability to perform its tasks, “Jaafari underscored.
Jaafari pointed out that despite all the international claims and UN reference resolutions to end the Israeli occupation of Arab lands and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the borders of June 1967,no progress is made in this regard, rather continued Israeli aggression on Gaza, crimes against humanity were committed, with unprecedented settlement policy especially in East Jerusalem, where number of Israeli settlers increased since Oslo agreement in 1993 from 70 thousand to 700 thousands, coupled with the escalation of attacks on Christian and Muslim holy sites. “
Syria’s representative to the UN concluded by calling on UN member states to vote in favor of the draft resolution entitled “The Syrian Golan” proposed by the Egyptian delegate to the UN, in line with the relevant UN resolutions, including UNSC resolution No. 497 of 1981, which considered Israel’s decision to annex the occupied Syrian Golan in 1967 as null and void and of no legal effect.
However, the Egyptian Permanent Representative to the UN, Amr Abu Ata proposed to the UNGA two draft resolutions on occupied Jerusalem and the Syrian Golan, on behalf of the adoptive sides, as an expression of the international community’s rejection of the Israeli occupation illegitimate practices in the occupied Arab territories, including the occupied Syrian Golan.
In a speech before the UNGA, Abu-Ata explained that “the draft resolutions came under item 35 of the agenda entitled” the situation in the Middle East. “
