Lavrov: Russia Finds no Legal Grounds for Non-Cooperation with Syria in Fighting against Terrorism

BEIJING, (ST) _ Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stressed that Russia’s position is based on the need to combat terrorism on the basis of international law, stressing “we do not see any legal grounds for not cooperating with the Syrian government in this matter.”

In remarks after talks with his US counterpart, John Kerry on the sidelines of the work of the Economic Cooperation forum, the Asia-Pacific Week in Beijing yesterday, Lavrov added that the ” Americans have their way of dealing with the issue of fighting against terrorism and that they consider the coalition can work autonomously without conferring the UN Security Council and the approval of the Syrian government, “pointing out that Russia does not agree this approach.

Lavrov added that he had discussed with Kerry the situation in the Middle East and North Africa, with a focus primarily on the main threat, of Daesh terrorist organization and other related organizations such as al-Nusra front other extremist groups.

Russia has repeatedly stressed that the attacks directed by the international coalition to fight terrorism against terrorist organizations in Syria must be approved by the Syrian government and within an international consensus because doing that without an international umbrella will complicate the situation in the region.

Lavrov continued that he had ” discussed with Kerry the need to resume the political process between the Syrian government and the opposition, and that the US Secretary of State approved the Russian argument to that the Syrian opposition should represent various groups and not only the Alliance which includes people who left Syria a long time ago, while there are an internal opposition factions and therefore there should be a representational opposition.”

“We have also discussed steps that can be taken by Russia, the USA and countries in the region to hold a national dialogue among all Syrians as stipulated by the Geneva statement issued on June 30, 2012” Lavrov underscored.
