The Zionist occupation cabinet has approved a motion that allows a jail sentence of up to 20 years for the Palestinians who throw stones or other objects at Israelis and their vehicles.
The bill was approved by the Israeli cabinet on Sunday as part of what the regime calls a change to Israel’s penalty code.
The proposed law would also allow the imposition of a five-year jail sentence against those who hurl rocks at Israeli police cars and officers.
Currently, such moves have a maximum penalty of two years in prison.
The bill needs to be brought to the Israeli Ministerial Committee for Legislation and the Knesset (parliament) for approval.
It comes at a time when tensions are running high in East al-Quds (Jerusalem) over restrictions against Palestinians to enter the al-Aqsa Mosque compound.
Israel closed the al-Aqsa Mosque compound to Muslim worshippers on Thursday after a 32-year-old Palestinian, MoatazHejazi, made an attempt on the life of Yehuda Glick, an American-born Israeli settler on October 29. Hejazi was killed during an Israeli raid on his home in the Abu Tor neighborhood.
The al-Aqsa compound, located in the Israeli-occupied Old City of al-Quds, is a flashpoint holy Islamic site. The mosque is Islam’s third holiest site after Masjid al-Haram in Mecca and Masjid al-Nabawi in Medina, Saudi Arabia.
